A garden update

August 14th 2009 00:07
With comments recently about using organic produce grown in the garden, I though I should post some pictures of what's happening in my veggie patch at the moment. It's also a bit of a to do list as with each bumper crop comes the guilt that I should be doing something to preserve these great flavours to use throughout the year.

lemons

Lemons: Make preserved lemons for Moroccan cooking

Rocket

Rocket: There is a ridiculous amount of rocket in my garden (and I don't really eat it). It came up after I let my one plant from last year go to seed. Make rocket pesto.

parsley

Parsley: I have managed to create a parsley hedge, which I am actually pretty happy about. I use parsley a lot so I'm not worried about have an abundance of it. I think I will use some in my rocket pesto. Garnish, garnish, garnish!

radishes

Radishes: I really can't claim to do anything with these apart from eat them in a salad. I only grew a few and they didn't grow very big.

broccoli

Broccoli and cauliflower: Broccoli soup is a great winter warmer - and it is so good for you. My favourite thing to do with broccoli and cauliflower at the moment is to slice it thinly, and then drizzle with a little oil and bake in the oven. The sweetness of the vegetables comes through and they take on a beautiful golden hue.

Wow Helen - that's awesome!!

I love Broccoli and would love to grow it abundantly.

I am about to go on annual leave and am spending some time at my folks place - will do some photography of mum's garden - it's amazing!! They grow everything from mangoes to figs to cabbage and everything in between. Nice work and I am still jealous

Thanks Jason - I'd love to see your mum's garden - I find vegetables and fruit trees so much more appealing than flowers!!
