A (purely potato) rant

July 5th 2009 00:14
purely potato

Anyone who has watched even the odd half hour of Australian television in the past couple of weeks would no doubt have seen a particular frozen vegetable company (Ahhhh - you've done it again) spruiking their latest modern-day food offering - Purely Potato.

As the name suggests, Purely Potato is potato, frozen. You can buy packs (more packaging!) where the potato is sliced, cubed and cut into chunks. Perfect they say for creating potato bakes, mashed potato and potato salads.

Now, don't get me wrong, frozen vegetables have their place (their place is in the freezer Helen, otherwise they wouldn't be frozen). But, when did we become too lazy to peel and cut up our own potatoes?

Other vegetables might be more suitable for freezing to prolong their shelf life, but potatoes last for ages. According to their website the potatoes still take about the same amount of time to cook, so that's not an advantage either. It seems the only reason for this new line, is to save us the onerous and time-consuming task of chopping.

Come on people - let's not be the generation who forgot how to prepare vegetables!

*Note* Growing potatoes is actually really easy. All you need to do is grab a couple of potatoes out of your normal shopping (or buy proper seed potatoes from a nursery), dig a little hole and chuck them in the ground. They will quickly come up at this time of year and they're ready to dig up once they flower. For a better crop, cover over with pea straw each time the green tips come up until you have a large mound.

Once you dig them up you will need to wash, peel and cut them before use.

Such a hassle I know

Even worse here in the UK : Waitrose has started selling fresh potatoes in a bag. They're peeled and washed. "Ready to cook!"

Costs much more, packaged smaller, what a total snob-shopping item. Stupid.

Helen, isn't it good to plant ourselves organic potatoes?

By the way, have you ever plant the sweet potato before? It tastes even better than sweet potato!

Hi Helen,

Great post. But I think you've got it wrong when you said the only reason for frozen potatoes is to save us the time of chopping them. No, the only reason for frozen potatoes is to make money for the company selling them. Peel them, chop them, place them in a freezer bag and charge three times as much as you would otherwise.

They've perhaps *succeeded* in answering the needs of the time-poor...?!

Somewhat unrelated, but just the other day, I dug up our tiny little patch of potatoes. Got about 20 little ones, which we ate that night.

Oh. My. God. I'd forgotten just how much better they taste when they're not bought!

Thanks for your comments guys - glad it's not just me whose getting worked up about these 'time savers'. And what's with all the extra packaging???

Wilson - I would love to grow my own sweet potatoes, unfortunately it's just too cold where I live to do so.

Morgan - I don't think these guys even come with seasoning - and you're right about the mushrooms. The worst thing about the mushrooms is that they're more likely to go bad once they've been cut!

Spike - My potatoes always come out being a little smaller than I'd hoped - but they do taste fantastic. Good work!

Obviously we are doomed. The bell has been ringing, but the frozen potatoes - the death knell.

doomed

Well, I guess they'd at least be better than instant mashed potatoes. And I DO know some people who are too lazy to peel and cut their own potatoes. I have friends who NEVER make home made mashed potatoes - always use the instant - because it's too much work! Personally, I think it's well worth the little bit of work - because instant mashed potatoes are horrible!
