Aesthetics over substance

My friend made these party bags for the girls to take home after the Hen's Night. They include essential morning after medication such as asprin and a Berocca as well as an assortment of heart shaped treats. I contributed to these by making ginger hearts (recipe to come soon).
We also included Heart Beat lollies, the heart shaped lollies with writing on them and chocolate hearts.
After a bit of testing around the place we came to the conclusion that you can not find heart shaped lollies that actually taste nice. Most of them have a fake cherry flavour, which seems to universally remind people of cough medicine. So, does the fact that the lollies are in a cute shape mean that they don't have to taste nice? Or can they get away with it because they're pretty?
Essentially, do these items function as food, or decoration?
