When holidaying, there is nothing more delightful than a good lunch with a nice glass of wine – or two.
Banrock Station had been recommended to me by a friend who lives in the Riverland. She suggested we stop by there for a bite to eat and admire the views overlooking their wetlands. The weather was perfect for a leisurely lunch, and as we sat on the timber deck, overlooking the vines in the foreground, and the continuing boardwalk in the distance, the sounds of waterbirds nearby provided their own relaxing melody.
To begin we ordered a plate of dips with pita and vegetables. I suspect that the dips were store bought and the pita had been fried and was quite hard and difficult to eat. The vegetables had been sliced thinly, which meant they looked beautiful, but were actually pretty useless with the dips.
For mains I ordered bruschetta with roasted pumpkin, caramelised shallots and goats cheese. The boy ordered emu sausages which came on a bread of mashed sweet potatoe with an onion gravy.
My meal was delicious. The bread was very gently toasted and the shallots were melt-in-your-mouth sweet. The pumpkin was nice a soft and the goats cheese complemented the flavours and textures well.
By all accounts the sausages were also very good, with the plate well and truly ‘licked’ clean.
To accompany our meals, I enjoyed a glass of the sparkling shiraz and the boy had an organic shiraz. I sipped the organic shiraz and wasn’t particularly impressed, although I suspect that the sparkling had somewhat overpowered by palate by that stage.
Banrock Station should definitely be on your list of places to visit while at the Riverland. Even if you can’t stop for a meal, grab a glass of wine and head out onto the deck and take in the atmosphere.
