Blue Ribbon Cookbook

If you are looking for a good, old-fashioned recipe for a sponge, preserve or biscuit, where else to look but your local country show. Liz Harfull’s book The Blue Ribbon Cookbook, works on this premise and offers the reader a chance to get back to cooking basics.
The Adelaide Hills’ author has been around that state collecting the recipes and stories of people who have won first place in the cooking section at a local country show. Recipes for boiled fruit cake, jam rolls and tomato sauce fill the pages as do tips from the cook and tips from the judges. For example, did you know, that if you enter a cake or some baked goods into a country show, don’t even bother taking it to the judges if you have lines on the base from where it has been cooling on a rack – it’s an instant disqualification.
The cooks featured in this book range from three to ninety-three and they all have a strong sense of pride in their contribution to the traditions of good country fare and of agricultural shows.
There are two definitions of cooking: afternoon tea or shearing shed, and show cooking is afternoon tea – country show cook.
