Confessions of a 'helper'
September 19th 2008 12:10
I have a confession. I can’t just watch other people cook. That is, I think I can, but I offer helpful suggestions, and suddenly I am being told to leave the kitchen, or “just sit down and relax”.
Now, honestly – I am just trying to help.
“I’m just saying that if I was making this I would have the water on by now…”
or
“It might be a good idea just to turn the heat down a little there….”
The worst part about the whole thing is that I know that I do it, and in so many cases I actually bite my tongue and don’t say anything, I just watch as something burns, or sit back until the cook realises that they haven’t started the rice and that the curry will now get cold while they wait. And then I’ll just say one little thing about how perhaps the meal should just sit quietly in the oven while we wait and suddenly “How about you just get me a drink or something Helen… I’m making dinner… just let me do it”
How do other chefs do it? Perhaps it’s best just to remove oneself from the kitchen?
