Cooking with Grandma
November 25th 2010 05:27
About every six weeks or so, my sister and I head to my grandma and grandpa’s to cook up a storm. We’ve been doing it for a few months now, and we create sweet and savoury dishes for their freezer, usually about four different recipes, leaving them with about 12 meals and various slices which they can thaw and reheat as they wish.
An enjoyable afternoon, these ‘Sunday sessions’ are a good way for us to keep in touch with the grands – and we are always treated to lunch and two serves of something to take home for dinner that night.
Most recently we have made a sweet and sour stir fry, beef and almond casserole, apricot crumble slice and a macadamia and ginger slice. The macadamia slice particularly is delicious, and I really should make this one at home. The beef and almond casserole also tasted good, and I was thinking I might look out for some cheap beef cuts and make a couple batches of this to stock my freezer for when the cooking bug does not take me.
It is quite a satisfying thing to do, to fill your freezer with all sorts of goodies, but most of the time I enjoy the routine of getting home from work, pouring a glass of something and pottering around the kitchen preparing the evening meal.
What do you think? Do you like to get your cooking done and out of the way, or do you enjoy the creative process each day?
