Devour - a review

Devour donuts

One of Adelaide’s newest dessert bars, Devour on Prospect Road is a wonderful place to go to let your sweet tooth run wild. The decor, a mix of luxurious blacks and whites with a few hints of red, feels indulgent – and that’s really what dessert bars are all about. With a table of six on a Tuesday night, we had made a booking to ensure we wouldn’t miss out. The venue itself is not very big, with seating for around about 30 people, but it feels wonderfully intimate. When we arrived we were seated right in the middle of the eatery and straight away the sweet scents of cinnamon, sugar and cocoa wafted over us – I wish my house smelt like that all the time!

We were offered the tasting plate which included a combination of three of the menu items, but in the end, we were all keen for the chocolate filled donuts, served with runny salted chocolate fudge, pieces of honeycomb and a raspberry sauce. We shared each serve between two people. We also ordered a serve of the macaroons, which the waitress very kindly ensured came with six pieces so that no one missed out. The macaroon flavour of the day was green tea with a dark chocolate filling and we were all impressed by the fact that they weren’t overly sweet, and the texture was beautiful – crispy on the outside, chewy in the middle.

The donuts were definitely my highlight from the plate. Generously dusted in cinnamon sugar, they were served still warm so the chocolate in the middle was melted through and permeated each mouthful. Mmmmmm.

My only issue with the whole thing (and I am just being picky here) is that they do not have a website as yet and that they encourage you to make bookings on their facebook wall. I’m not so keen on the idea of letting everyone know where I am going to be at a certain time, and so opted to ring the mobile phone number (although probably the first time I have ever made a booking at a restaurant to a mobile). I can only assume that because they are still so new, these things (website and landline) will come.

Perfect for a catch up with the girls, a nice date spot for a Friday or Saturday night, or really just wonderful for anytime you feel like something sweet and decadent – I have a feeling Devour might become an Adelaide hotspot
