Dinner at The Belgian
February 23rd 2009 02:34
My beautiful boy has officially finished up at his job, and will begin at university next week. It's a big change for him, but certainly a good one.
To celebrate, we had a farewell dinner with a couple of colleagues and a few clients at the Belgian Beer Cafe. Affectionately known as The Belgian, the bar/restaurant is located right in the heart of Adelaide's East End. They are best known for their wide selection of Belgium beers on tap (you can select your beverages from their menu which comes complete with tasting notes, or you can purchase a tasting platter which has a small quantity of each to drink) the restaurant side of the business is often packed and with good reason.
There was quite a group of us who attended dinner, so naturally there was quite a selection of food. My bb had the provencale mussels, served in a traditional mussel pot with lots of tomato, galic and basil broth, accompanied by a cone of pommes frites and creamy mayonnaise. One of the things with this dish, is that you are served a full kilogram of mussels, so you don't often need the cone of chips.
I ordered the Lamp Rump. This was filled with fetta and roast almonds and served with rosemary potatoes and steamed beans. It was all cooked to perfection, but my favourite part was by far the potatoes. They tasted similar to the potatoes that accompany my favourite roast lemon chicken - yum.
Other dishes served at our table include the Menage a trios, a trio of sausages served with mashed potato, greens and a red wine jus and the scotch fillet. By all reports everything was fantastic.
A special dessert treat for one of the girls was a plate of belgian waffles. Even the smell of them was enough to satisfy my sweet tooth. They were served with banana, caramel sauce and vanilla bean icecream.
The food was fantastic, but as always, the beer here was the real highlight. As designated driver I didn't have much to drink, but the chance to try different things, and then to pair the beverages with the main meal was a fun addition to the night. Highly recommended.

If you is in Adelaide - you should head out for a drive one night to my friend's restaurant in Port Noarlunga - the food is bloody amazing. Ask for Aaron (Chef) or Kim (his wife and the boss).
I did a review HERE
And gratz to your son on Uni.

Not my son - my hubby (what a terrible word...)
The spice bar has been on my list of places to go for a while now. Definitely on the list of places to go for lunch with an incorporated road trip.
