Fried Rice
January 22nd 2009 18:48
As part of our transition into the student life, I thought we should begin our frugal eating campaign. This began much easier than anticipated last night when we made fried rice. Just to prove how cheap and easy this can be, I'd put a liberal guess as to the cost of this meal at $1 - total.
1/2 onion
1/2 a large zucchini (fresh produce from the Brother-in-law)
3 mushrooms
Approx 3 cups cooked rice
2 tablespoons soy sauce
some chopped ham
3 eggs, made into an omlette and then chopped (fresh produce from the chickens)
2 spring onions (fresh produce from the veggie patch)
Begin by softening the onion, zucchini and mushrooms in a little oil. Once they begin to become transluscent, add the rice and soy sauce. Heat through, stirring occassionally to prevent the rice from sticking. Add remaining ingredients and stir through until well mixed.
It's a good idea at this stage to have a taste and test your flavours. Some may prefer a stronger soy sauce taste, others may like a dash of sweet chilli sauce as well or you could add other asian flavours such as tamarind, ketjup manis, fish sauce or lime juice.
