One Magic Square

As an avid vegetable gardener, I jumped at the chance to interview author Lolo Houbein about her new book One Magic Square. Lolo lives in Mount Barker, but grew up in Holland during World War II and as a result lived through terrible famine. Since that time, she has espoused the idea that every individual should have some control over their own food.
One Magic Square is written on the basis that one square metre of earth is all you need to begin your own vegetable garden – and Lolo writes with such passion and conviction that one feels compelled to get up, go outside and start to till the soil.
Lolo professes that her favourite vegetable is purple kale, of which I am not a big fan, although it does look pretty. But there are plenty of vegetable plots described in the book which I am more than partial too. Even her simply plan for a salad plot looks great, and the curry plot, stir-fry plot and pizza/pasta plot will all make an appearance in my garden in the coming season.
If you are even thinking about beginning a food garden (Lolo doesn’t like the term veggie patch as she thinks people might laugh at it) this is a great book to inspire and to turn your thumbs green.
