Slow cooker Malay Beef Curry

slow cooker malay beef curry

I am right into the swing of things with the slow cooker now. Such a wonderful appliance I can't believe I went without for so long!

This curry is very aromatic, and it uses some great whole spices - just be careful to pick them out before you serve, or at least warn your guests that they might discover a mouthful of cardamon pod!

1kg gravy beef, cubed
2 tbsp ground coriander
1 tbsp ground cumin
1-2 tsp crushed chilli flakes
2 tsp chinese five spice (is this becoming my favourite ingredient???)
1 tsp tumeric
3 tbsp canola oil
1 medium onion, chopped
4 cardamon pods, bruised
1 cinnamon stick
1 whole star anise
6 cloves
4 med potatoes, cubed
1 cup cocnut cream
1 cup boiling water

Turn crockpot on to preheat. Coat meat in the first five spices. Gently fry onions in a pan, then brown the meat with the oil - you may need to do this in two parts depending on the size of your pan. Place into cooker.

Add whole spices, potatoes, coconut cream and water to the slow cooker. Stir to combine then cook for 8-10 hours on low, or 4-5 hours on high.

Serve with rice and a good dollop of mango chutney. Mmmmmmmm, mmmmmmmmm, mmmmm.

If you were in a hurry you could just put everything into the slow cooker, stir and walk away. Sealing in the spices does add a lot more flavour to the meat, while the easier version just gives you lots of flavour in the sauce.

What a very aromatic looking dish!! Will put it on my slow cooker list.

This Sunday I am having friends over for an Orble dinner. Am cooking some of yours and one of Food Mage's meals for dinner.

I am definatley making Lemon and Passionfruit tarts, possibly Food Mage's Pork ribs (or maybe your pork belly) and am stuck on an entree. I may just go with cheeses or some home made dip but trying to cook the whole night from Orble

Hi Jason,

That sound awesome! Wish I wasn't a couple states away then I could come along.

A favourite at my place is zucchini pancakes layered with smoked salmon and served with a dollop of sour cream with spring onion. You could make pumkpin pancakes becuase of your aversion to zucchini.

Another option would be a slow cooker soup!

How wonderful, a curry without curry powder! I'm allergic to something in most curry powders. This way I can make the dish, which only has one ingredient I've never eaten in the whole form, star anise. Have had anise in some forms but not star anise. Thank you, now I need to go find a slow cooker (crock pot to those of us her in the states,) that I haven't used for jewelry making. Humm? Sister perhaps.

Thank you so very much.

Hi Food Mage,

My husband also has a bad reaction to curry powder - we think it's the black pepper which is in most of them.

I love star anise - but I think it's probably their shape more than their actual flavour.
