Spring Veggies
September 10th 2009 23:51
The weather is just beginning to warm up, so it's time to think about what vegetables to plant coming into summer. Tomatoes are always a favourite, and so are summer herbs such as basil.
Last weekend I searched thorugh my seed packets and planted a variety of things. These include some lebanese cucumbers, three different types of tomatoes, finger eggplant, baby watermelon, pumpkins and my all time favourite, spaghetti squash.
Spaghetti squah is something I remember eating back in the 80s, but it seems to have disappeared from most fruit and veg stores and supermarkets here in SA. So, you can imagine my excitement when I found a supplier of seeds to grow my own. I had some success last year, with three or four medium sized fruits, but I am confident of more this season.
Also, in the garden I planted a small 1m x 1m corn 'field'. The trick when planting corn is to do so in a square shape, so that when the wind blows the stalks the brush against each other a pollinate the fruits. I've also planted some beetroot seeds and some peas.
Now it's just a matter of waiting a few weeks to see some action. Stay tuned!

Have fun, don't forget the melons, green peppers, potatoes, yams, and other goodies. Onions, green and yellow (my preference), and some chives, mine go year to year because I let them go to seed.
Look forward to hearing more.
