The Red Door Food Store

I really should have written this post ages ago. It’s about a wonderful little café near my house called The Red Door Food Store. I was very taken by it the first time I went in to purchase some truffle oil for my mum’s birthday (that was back in October….) and I have been back again for cheese, then a cheese platter and hot chocolate, then cheese, and most recently hot chocolate and goose fat (for roasting potatoes - mmmmmmm).
You’ll probably guess by that list that this lovely little store is more than just your average coffee shop. Run by Jenni and Rob Trimboli, The Red Door Food Store stocks a range of gourmet goodies such as locally produced vanilla bean paste, home made pate and cold pressed olive oils.
The décor is something close to French Provencal and the seating, though sparse is pretty comfortable. Ordering meals can be an exercise in waiting, with the kitchen apparently staffed solely by Robert on the weekends. However, once your food does arrive it is lovely and rich and beautifully presented. Our last visit included a wait of around 15 minutes for a piece of fruit cake, but when it came out, Rob explained that the wait had been because he had made some freshly whipped cream.
We still have quite a bit to get through to taste their whole range, but never fear, I am prepared to do the work
The Red Door Food Store is located at 77 Onkaparinga Valley Road, Balhannah, South Australia. Give it a go!
