To Market

Last night we went to the market - the Adelaide Central Market to be exact. The weather was cold, wet and windy, which in many ways meant that the market was better because there weren't so many people around - more space for us to wander the aisles.
Before heading to the market I like to have a think of all the delicious and exotic spices and ingredients I have needed for recipes over the past few weeks, and then make sure I pick up those things. This time though, I wracked my brain and came to the conclusion that I was pretty spiced up with all my trips to Gaganis Brothers, and I was also doing pretty well for my asian sauces etc. The one thing I was on the hunt for was a mandolin, so that when I julieanne carrots etc, it won't take me hours (slight exageration) to get through.
Oh, and rice. I needed some rice.
We began our market adventure at the cheese shop (the place where all market adventures should begin). We knew that we would be making a picnic dinner of bits as well, so my companions bought a few things including a 'Touch of Blue' cheese as well as a French camambert and an edam. All were delicious. I also purchased some mini chol - which I love grilled over toast.
For the evenings meal we also bought some olives, from the olive shop, some metwhurst, from the metwhurst shop and some roast chicken parcels from the roast chicken parcel shop - also known as the butcher. And for dessert, a fruit tart, which had the best custard I have ever tasted and a citrus tart. Usually I love a citrus tart - but we all agreed that the quarter that we each had was sufficient - a very rich tart!
Other purchases from the market included: mushrooms (from the mushroom shop.... ok, I'll stop that now); free range, organic chicken breast; turkish bread; rice (as needed); glace cherries (for florentines); and a mandolin! Now it's just time to do some cooking!!
