Turkish Bakery Delight

I have to admit that I don't know a lot about Turkish cuisine, but when I started to consider their influence on coffee, bread, yoghurt, kebabs and of course sweets such as Turkish delight, I realised how often I am drawn to these flavours.
Turkish Bakery Delight is a compilation of traditional and original Turkish recipes, written by Deniz Gokturk.
Born in Istanbul, Deniz learned the traditional methods of Turkish baking and hospitality traditions when she was growing up.
Both of these elements are discussed in the book, and along with beautiful, full-colour photographs, each recipe includes a description of taste, and when and how it is traditionally eaten.
There are plenty of recipes in this book which I would like to make. Spinach and feta filled rolls, turkish mushroom pizzas, sesame seed cookies and almond peach tart are just some of the treats which caught my eye.
Because this is a book on baking, I did find it a bit limiting in terms of putting together an actual meal. However, I can imagine making the breakfast buns with ricotta for brunch with the girls, and preparing the olive rolls for a tasty lunch or dinner with an antipasto platter.
Overall, I think the traditional Turkish treats, such as baked kadayif, which is a crunchy dessert with a cheese filling, and the kazandibi, which is a dessert made from a sticky mixture of rice and chicken breast, are the most intriguing. There is also a great section at the back of the book which focusses on turkish drinks - perfect for an authentic accompaniment.
Turkish Bakery Delight is written by Deniz Gokturk Akcakanat, published by New Holland and retails for $29.95.
